Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy
Different electrotherapy modalities may be used to enhance tissue repair and provide pain relief following injury, and are invariably used in conjunction with hands on treatment.
Ultrasound
Involves the passage of high frequency sound waves to the site of the soft tissue injury. Ultrasound has a pro-inflammatory action and is used to promote soft tissue repair following a muscle, tendon or ligament injury.
Interferential
Interferential therapy involves the passage of low frequency electrical stimulation to the tissues. This may produce a pain relieving effect by either opiod release(endorphins), or a gating mechanism whereby the painful sensation is blocked and prevented from reaching the brain.
TENS
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation(TENS) is aportable unit which can be used by the patient ay home. It is used for pain relief and will work on the same mechanisms as the interferential therapy. Patients are able to loan a TENS unit free of charge, or may purchase one from the clinic if they find it beneficial for their symptoms.
